Following the formation of Jardine Matheson & Co in 1832, Canton Insurance Co was formed in 1836.
Jardine Insurance Brokers was formed in 1972. Over the next few years, the business grew rapidly as a result of acquisitions and organic growth in wholesale, retail and reinsurance broking.
Lloyd Thompson was founded in 1981 and listed on the London Stock Exchange in October 1987. From its origins as specialists in Marine Hull and Energy, Lloyd Thompson grew rapidly in all classes of wholesale and reinsurance businesses, developing a strong presence in London.
JLT Group was formed in February 1997 through the merger of Jardine Insurance Brokers plc (JIB) and the Lloyd Thompson Group. The merger combined Lloyd Thompson’s specialist skills and JIB's international network, particularly in Asia, making JLT Group the fifth largest insurance broker in the world.
JLT acquired a major stake in JLT Private Client Services (JLTPCS), a company based in Singapore that provided specialist services in Life Assurance to the fast-growing wealth management market in Asia.
JLT successfully completed the acquisition of Anda Insurance, one of Singapore's leading independent insurance intermediaries specialising in foreign domestic maid and bond insurance.
Jardine Matheson increased its shareholding in JLT from 30% to 40%.
February JLT acquired Insfield Insurance Brokers Sdn Bhd in Malaysia, one of the country's major insurance brokers.
October JLT strengthened its presence in Taiwan with the acquisition of ForVision Risk Services.
November JLT acquired Towers Watson’s global reinsurance brokerage business.
JLT acquired Lambert Brothers Holdings Limited (LBH), an independent insurance and employee benefits broker.
February JLT acquired a major stake in Essential Healthcare Network (EH), China. The new company was named JLT Essential Benefit Solutions Corporation Limited.
September JLT opened a representative office in Myanmar, Yangon on 5 September 2015.
